A Bit About Varicose Vein Treatment Options

Blog

Varicose veins are blood vessels close to the skin's surface that have become twisted and enlarged. Varicose veins are usually not a health concern, but they may cause some pain and discomfort. It is always a good idea to have them checked regularly to make sure no clots have developed or the veins are not bleeding. However, you may decide on having them treated if they are causing you any discomfort or for cosmetic purposes even if they are not creating a health issue. If you are at all concerned about them, seek out a venous disease doctor to discuss your options.

Home Treatment

If the veins are not large and bulging but are considered to be "spider veins," it is possible to treat them at home to prevent them from getting worse. Your doctor can give you information on ways you can stop the progression of the problem. A few tips include:

  • Elevating the legs
  • Wearing compression stockings
  • Avoiding sitting or standing for long periods
  • Exercise

Of course, these tips can help even if you have larger varicose veins and want to keep them from growing or having more form.

Ablation

Ablation is often referred to as laser treatment when talking about varicose veins. A laser fiber is inserted into the veins closest to the skin causing the veins to close off. This keeps the blood from flowing through them so they are not noticeable or engorged. It not only keeps the veins from being visible but also alleviates any pain the enlargement causes

Phlebectomy

This procedure involves a series of small cuts over the veins so they can be removed. If the veins need to be tied off before removal because they are larger and have more blood flow, the procedure is called ligation and stripping. There is no need to worry about a lack of blood flow due to the removal of these veins as they have already reduced the blood flow in the area. In addition, the portions of the veins that are not cut out can grow and form new pathways for the blood to travel.

If the varicose veins are small and not causing you any trouble, it is perfectly fine to follow the at-home treatments above. However, if you are struggling with the condition for any reason, seek out a varicose vein treatment specialist. They can advise you on the best course of action to resolve the problems.

how a cosmetic procedure changed my life

All of my life, I was picked on for having a larger nose that most other people. I had dealt with picking and torment throughout high school and college, but once I graduated from college, I decided to make a few changes to the way that I look. Some people are not so open to cosmetic procedures and gave me a hard time about my choice, but after the procedure was complete and my nose was healed, they could see why I did what I did. You can follow my story on my website. Here, you will learn what I went through before, during and after my procedure.
