When you leave your thirties behind and start your forties, you expect to pull out the hair dye for the silver strands, and you expect body changes. What you do not expect, and which can sneak up on you, are the drooping flaps of skin under your arms that make you look like the human equivalent of a flying squirrel. If you can feel these massive flaps of skin wobbling and flapping in the breeze every time you wave to someone, you are not alone. The forties is when the underarm flaps really start becoming quite pronounced. If you want to wave goodbye to your "wings" and hello to higher self-esteem, here is what you can do next.
First, Get Close to a Healthy Weight
People who gain weight evenly all over their bodies or people who gain more weight in their top halves than their bottom halves will see bigger, droopier flaps under their arms. Before you consider surgery, it is a good idea to get close to a healthy weight. The reason for this is so that the plastic surgeon can cut more loose skin away and make your brachioplasty results look the best they can be. In this case, more is better, because the less fat you have stored in the underarm sag, the more the doctor can remove.
Next, Try to Tone up the Muscles
If you spend even fifteen minutes twice a week working on the triceps muscles, when these muscles are as toned as they can get, you get better plastic surgery results. Your surgeon is better able to see and feel where the muscles are under the skin and fat. He/she will not need to do excessive stitching of these muscles to help them appear more toned. The fat and skin will be easier to trim away as well.
Finally, Surgery as an Option
If you have done all of the above in preparation for cosmetic surgery, you may find that your prep work has already made great strides towards getting rid of your "wings." If you like what you see now, you may not want or need surgery. However, if you still have funny little pockets of fat and some loose skin, an arm lift procedure can be scheduled and proceeded with as planned. Just keep in mind that you will not be able to lift anything, or lift your arms, for a few weeks while everything heals, so you will need help and you will need to wear shirts that do not need to be pulled over your head.

All of my life, I was picked on for having a larger nose that most other people. I had dealt with picking and torment throughout high school and college, but once I graduated from college, I decided to make a few changes to the way that I look. Some people are not so open to cosmetic procedures and gave me a hard time about my choice, but after the procedure was complete and my nose was healed, they could see why I did what I did. You can follow my story on my website. Here, you will learn what I went through before, during and after my procedure.
